A day in HK-IVE

Today we had an exciting day for us to learn something new, that is we need to learn Cantonese within a few weeks.

We came for our first practical lesson on Biochemical Techniques at 0830h with our first subject was to use the pH meter.Their pH meter was very outdated, not like us which I personally feel that our pH meter is more modernised compared to them.We were separated into three different groups for us to observe and also learn their method on how to operate the pH meter.

That's when Dr Bessie Fong started to conduct the lesson in Cantonese and partial English. However, most of the time she converse in Cantonese. We were clueless as we didn't know what's going on.Fortunately,as she draw out the diagrams and read the procedures and the protocols,we know that they had to measure and calibrate using different kind of buffers.

The students need to prepare the materials themselves using different pH value. Then, they had to calculate using the formula given. In addition, they had to calibrate the meter using Tris-HCl and phosphate buffer. In a class of biotechnology stream(year 2),it is about 40 students per class whereas for the analytical science, there were less than 30 students per class. At the end of the day, they had to determine by each group had to submit their findings and compare about the results they had obtain.

Once again,we're clueless and decided to meet her after lunch.

As promised, after lunch,we meet up with her.She explained every single thing of what we had to do for our two modules which is Biochemical Techniques conducted by Dr Fong and Animal Cell Culture Technique conducted by Mr Yip.
